IN 2021-2022, BCM will host a site visit team representing the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). As the official accrediting body for medical education programs in the United States and Canada leading to the M.D. degree, the LCME evaluates medical schools about every eight years. The LCME accreditation process provides a valuable opportunity for quality assurance and improvement. During these next two years prior to the formal visit, we will conduct a comprehensive review and analysis of our M.D. educational program that will involve many faculty, staff, and students.
Since our last LCME site visit in 2013, we have revised our educational programs and significantly enhanced our learning environments.
LCME Virtual Site Visit
Baylor College of Medicine School of Medicine will host a virtual site visit with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) from Sept. 27–29, 2021. The survey team will review the school’s accreditation survey package as well as virtually meet with students, residents, staff, and faculty as part of the process. At the conclusion of the survey visit, the survey team will submit a final report to the LCME Committee. The LCME will determine the accreditation status of the program and provide notification of status in Spring 2022.
LCME Mock Site Visit
In preparation for Baylor College of Medicine Fall 2021 LCME Site Visit (Sept. 26-29), consultants will be virtually visiting Baylor College of Medicine from Feb.28 - March 2, 2021 to conduct a Mock Site Visit. This visit is meant to mirror the actual site visit as closely as possible and to prepare students, residents, staff and faculty for what to expect during the Fall site visit.
LCME Kick-Off with Barbara Barzansky

Barbara Barzansky, Ph.D., MHPE, LCME Co-Secretary and Director of Undergraduate Medical Education of the American Medical Association presented an overview of the LCME self-study process. All members of the college were invited to this presentation to learn about the purpose of accreditation, the steps prior to and during a full LCME accreditation survey, and the trends in and causes of LCME “severe” accreditation actions.

Four Phases of LCME Accreditation
Phase I: Assembly of Document Collection Instrument (DCI) “database” of facts and figures related to the educational program leading to the M.D. degree
Phase II: Institutional self-study by a Task Force and Subcommittees: Faculty, Administration, and students will form subcommittees to review, analyze and critique the DCI. Students from across the continuum of medical training will convene a subcommittee to create a survey tool, administer the survey to their colleagues, analyze the finding and submit a report to the Task Force.
Phase III: The Task Force will produce an Executive Report based on institutional strengths and weaknesses as reported by the Task Force and Independent Student Analysis.
Phase IV: A site visit by an ad hoc survey team of the LCME will take place AY 21-22.
