Professional Statement
I first heard of genetic counseling as a career during the fall of my undergraduate junior year. Prior to this point, I had known I was interested in science education of some type and had just completed a summer internship at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland. Although I loved this experience, I found myself missing a deeper level of science that isn't always possible when working with children. When my professor mentioned genetic counseling during that genetics lecture, my ears perked up and I immediately became interested. I ended up completing my undergraduate Honors thesis on ethical considerations of genetic counseling and later accepted a genetic counseling assistant position in Dallas, TX after graduating. I worked in Dallas for a year while applying for graduate programs and was matched to Baylor College of Medicine. I love genetic counseling because the field gives me an opportunity to communicate science in a practical, applicable, and interesting way to patients for whom the information is directly relatable. I love that the field is constantly growing and changing and that there is opportunity to create your own career depending on your personal interests and passions. I am particularly excited and grateful to be training at BCM, where the program leadership listen carefully to our feedback and strive to grow and improve for our benefit. The education we receive here is world-class and it is evident that our experience is the top priority of the leadership team. In addition to the program itself, Houston's diversity and wide variety of rotation opportunities make BCM a special place to train.Projects
