It Stops with Me. Speaking Up Against Microaggressions: An Upstander Training
9:15-10:15 a.m. | Plenary Session
During this session participants will be introduced to the definition of microaggressions and the range of microaggressions. They will then learn about the impact of microaggressions on personal well-being and the delivery of health care. Thereafter, participants will be encouraged to explore personally experienced or observed microaggressions in a large group setting.
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
- Define the three forms of microaggressions.
- Describe the impact of microaggressions in the workplace.
- Utilize at least one strategy to address microaggressions as a bystander.

Developing the "Bias and Belonging" Program Initiative for Greater Equity in Research

As a research team embedded in a large hospital system, the Palliative Care and Resilience (PCAR) program at Seattle Children’s recognized our shortcomings around anti-racism work and responded to the need for greater discussion and action around the topic of equity during this past year. Our team has embarked on a strategic planning process and created a “Bias and Belonging” program focused on education, reflection, and action to achieve greater equity in our research practices from idea stage through implementation. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an evidence-informed model of our team-led initiative. Although the work will be continuing, we believe that we have garnered experience that may be helpful for other teams as we strive toward equitable medical institutions.

The Account of Centuries of Persecution and Racism of the American Indian /Alaskan Native: Its Impact on Health Status and Outcomes Today

The plight of the American Indian/Alaskan Native regarding their health status is a black mark on the federal government. Treaties guaranteeing health care and education have not been fulfilled. A brief review of the history of this population is given. Health systems are not able to meet the cultural needs of the population. Centuries of persecution and racism continue to impact this population. Many myths surround this population which is composed of many tribes with many customs. Myths regarding this population are explored. Tribes because of past and current treatment by the government have a great mistrust on any federal government initiatives. Tribes have initiated some strategies to meet their needs. Strategies are discussed.
