Research Funding


Blue Ridge ranking for October 2018 to September 2019 federal funding period was #33. In FY20, the research efforts of department faculty were supported by $79.5M in total extramural research funding (a total of 455 funding awards), including:

  • $47.8M from the NIH, $5M from the Veteran’s Administration
  • $9.5M from other federal agencies
  • $2.9M from industry support of clinical trials
  • $14.2M from state and other non-federal sources

Among these awards are NIH Center awards in endocrinology, infectious diseases, oncology, and gastroenterology, and a VA Center of Excellence Award (health services research). In addition, five sections have been awarded NIH T-32 grants to support research training in the fields of gastroenterology, hematology, health services research, immunology, infectious diseases and pulmonary medicine.


Clinical Research Consultations


The ICTR Biostatistics Core is providing consultations on Department of Medicine clinical or translational research studies. Available help includes general consultations, experimental design support, data analysis and manuscript preparation assistance.
