Those applying for general surgery categorical training upon completion of the M.D. degree should apply under the National Residency Matching Program.
Our general surgery residency program offers three separate specific tracks, through the NRMP number, which include the following:
Traditional Track (NRMP# 1716440C0) (Total: four positions) - candidates who match to this track complete five consecutive years of clinical general surgery training.
Research Track (NRMP#1716440C1) (Total: four positions) - candidates who match to this seven-year research track complete two years of mentored research, which takes place after their PGY-2 year of clinical training.
Global Surgery Track (NRMP#1716440C2) - Candidates who match to this seven-year track participate in two full years of rotations that provide the resident a global perspective and training with an excellent general surgery foundation. The global surgery track incorporates a rural domestic and international curriculum designed by the trainee that is combined with local rotations providing training in the 44 essential surgeries for global surgery including orthopedics, gynecology and urology. Additional elements of the program include internships at the World Health Organization in Geneva and with other international organizations, while allowing time for extensive research on this topic.

- Three letters of recommendation from faculty members
- Personal statement
- Dean's letter and transcript
- USMLE Board scores
- A completed ERAS application with a recent passport-size photograph
International graduates must meet the requirements established by the Graduate Medical Education Office at Baylor College of Medicine, as set by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and Immigration Services.
They will also need to contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates for information regarding the paperwork process for students and graduates of foreign medical schools. Baylor College of Medicine requires international medical graduates to meet the terms for an Institutional Permit, as outlined by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and have the documents necessary for a J-1 Visa.
Application and Selection Process
To allow adequate time for review and processing, all applications and supporting materials must be received through ERAS by the Surgery Education Office.
The selection of applicants is made based on information contained in the application form, medical school transcript, medical school dean's letter, and letters of recommendation, which are received from the ERAS program. The selected applicants are invited to interview with faculty members and current residents.
After the interview process is complete, the General Surgery Education Committee members review and rank all of the applicants. Final ranking is determined with consultation from both the department chair and program director.
The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery will conduct three formal virtual interview sessions in 2021:

Wednesday morning begins with the weekly departmental grand rounds. Our departmental chair, Dr. Todd Rosengart, will provide a welcome. This is followed by a presentation by the program director, Dr. Ronald Cotton, outlining our program in more detail. Each applicant will be interviewed by two faculty members and either our departmental chair, program director or associate program director.
Applicants interested in a non-designated preliminary position will need to submit an application through ERAS and select our preliminary program. Those applicants will be contacted for a phone interview during the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) during the week of match in March.
