PA Program Application Process

Applicants pursuing admission into the Baylor College of Medicine Physician Assistant Program are required to complete the online application via the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA). The deadline for submitting all application materials through CASPA (application, letters of recommendation, official GRE scores, official transcripts) and payment of supplemental fee is midnight Aug. 1 for each admissions cycle. Any application materials not submitted by the deadline will not be considered and will disqualify the application. Applications are available yearly in April.

The online application along with all official transcripts from colleges and universities attended, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation must be submitted directly to CASPA. Following the verification of all materials submitted, CASPA will forward an electronic data file for each completed and verified application to the Baylor PA Program.

All applicants to the Physician Assistant Program are reviewed in a four step process.

Administrative Review

Content

Stage one, carried out by the PA Program Admissions Office, involves an administrative review of each application to determine if all required documents have been received by the Aug 1 deadline and that each applicant has attained the minimum grade point averages and GRE scores. Applications passing the first stage of review are entered to the online Screening Portal and made available for review by members of the PA Program Admissions Committee. Those applications that fail to meet the stated minimums, submit the required documents by the published Aug. 1 deadline, pay the Supplemental Fee, or are unable to complete the course prerequisites by end of the spring semester of the year of enrollment are eliminated from further consideration.

Screening

Content

During the second stage of review, PA Program faculty screen and rank all eligible candidates through a holistic set of criteria reviewed by the PA Program Admissions Committee on an annual basis. The screening criteria include: academic preparedness, written communication, character development, motivation commitment and unique attributes. Evidence for scoring is derived from the applications, letters of recommendation, work, and extra-curricular activities described in the application. Each application screened is rated on each of the criteria. The scores assigned result in the Screening Index. Invitations are extended to those applicants that the admissions committee perceives to be competitive for admission.

Interviews

The third stage involves on-campus interviews. Invitations for on-campus interviews in November are communicated to qualified applicants in October by the PA Program Admissions Office. This occurs via email. The specific dates for interviews are decided by the PA Program Admissions Committee in collaboration with PA Program representatives to allow for the ongoing activities of multiple campus admissions processes. Invitees are asked to acknowledge their acceptance of the offer for interview to the PA Program Admissions Office within seven calendar days. A maximum of 150 applicants are interviewed.

The dates for the 2020 interviews are the following:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020 
  • Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020
  • Friday, Nov. 13, 2020

The on-campus experience begins with an afternoon-long orientation session on the first day followed by student-directed tours, and then an early evening social gathering. The orientation presents the interview process, discusses how and when decisions are made, exposes applicants to what the didactic and clinical experiences are like, offers an enrolled student perspective of the program, and speaks to the costs of PA education. The interviewees are then taken on tours of the facilities and campus by enrolled PA students. The social gathering that follows is attended by enrolled students, didactic faculty, core program faculty, and staff for purposes of information sharing while affording applicants’ opportunities to ask questions.

The following day involves face-to-face interviews with three faculty members involved in the didactic and clinical education of students enrolled in the PA Program. The criteria used by the interviewers to rate candidates include: critical thinking and insight, capacity to succeed, self-awareness and maturity, oral communication skills, compassion and empathy, teamwork, humility, role awareness, professionalism, and unique attributes. Each interviewer then scores the applicant and the combined interview scores result in the Interview Index.

Stage four involves all members of the admission committee and occurs the week following interviews. The committee thoroughly reviews all interviewed applicants, including scores from all previous stages of the admissions process. A final score, called the Decision Index, is assigned to each applicant. The Decision Index is used to invite applicants for acceptance into the PA program.

Admission Decisions

The top 40 applicants are offered admissions, in the form of a phone call, within two weeks of interviews. The remaining interviewed applicants will be given the option to remain on a wait list and given their general rank position on that list. Offers of admission will be extended pending completion and verification of prerequisite coursework requirements and completion of a criminal background check. Failure to complete the necessary prerequisite requirements by May of the year of enrollment will result in forfeit of your seat in the program.
